Maria
is our very first university- level
student. She has already passed her exams as a
qualified teacher and is now studying to become
a lawyer. She is the first of our mature students to
be married and also recently gave birth to a
baby girl.
She will be returning to her studies later
this year.

Conal lives
in San Mateo and is an active participant in
our classes. He lives with 9 other people in
3-rooms. They are resource poor but the family
bond is strong and the parents want them all
to study. He is currently attending school to
study Technical Drawing.

year of high school and she is
another on of the super -stars
in our Integral / Philosophy classes. She is
currently
attending junior college
studying to be a teacher.
After graduation this year she wants to
go on to
university to study law.

he is able

He lives with 11 other people

crowded conditions but that
does not
deter his playful
and sometimes mischievous

story: Isa
is one of five children in his family, one of whom is
autistic. They eat just one meal per day
normally comprised of herbs, tortillas or
beans. Isa usually gets up at 4.30am in the morning
so he can help his family in the daily tasks
before attending school. He is the first
student to arrive at the school, though he
is the one who lives farthest away.

JC began
with our program in 2010. He is an astute
individual and with his direct nature
will
make a great teacher when he
graduates. After
that he tells us that
he plans to go on to a university to
study business administration. JC is also
tutoring 3 of the girls from our program on
weekends in math and science.

is in his first year of junior college and he really loves our Integral / Philosophy classes.
After graduation this year he wants to study
Information Technology and we are helping to support
that dream with him.

siblings who are living with their mom in a
corn-stalk shack with dirt floors, tin roof
and plastic to keep out the elements. Carmen
is going to school in the evenings because
the day classes are full up and we need
sponsors to help with the cost of this
support.

Angelita
(r) lives with her mom,
her two younger sisters and
her step-father. Abuse is
rife in this one-room house. Her mom is sick and does
not work at all and the step-father sometimes works in
the market, but often he does
not get odd jobs because he is
already under the influence.

Three
kids ages 7, 3 and 1 whose
mother abandoned them. Their
names are Luisito, Jimena, and
Vincente.
They were living with their grandma in a 1.5 room tin-walled shack
with dirt floors. The grandma works
all day picking up wood in the
mountain while the older one
takes care of
the two little ones. These 3
began our Junior Sponsorship program!

story: Mario often takes care of the youngest of his 6 brothers while his mother is working in the
mornings. He attends school in the
afternoon and loves it. He is of great help
at the house.
As of now, there is no father, he died
recently.

Marta is 10 years old. She has 2 brothers and 3 sisters. They all live
together with their parents in a one room
house. Her father picks coffee beans, when in
season, for a ten hours per day every day
for which he earns $80 a month. Her
mom works washing clothes in houses she
earns $40
per month.

Flor is 10 years old, she lives in a house in the mountain, Vista Hermosa.
She lives in one of the highest (the
higher the poorer). She has two
brothers, one of them is also a
student, Mauricio, and appears in the
pictures below.

old and lives in the village of San Mateto. She is the oldest daughter of the family.
She is very lucky because her parents would like her to study. |

San Andres, about 30 minutes from our home.
She needs braces to walk to the bus that
takes her to school, which she loves! That
cost is already sponsored our long term

Jackie
Beatriz is 9 years old. Her mom is suffering
from depression after the death of her
brother and grandmother in the
last six months. Jackie wants to study but
is beginning to present some stress symptoms
as skin problems, lack of appetite,
attention disorders and hyper-activity.

Maritza is a happy
little 7 year old girl. S
he lives in a very poor situation. She along
with her mom and younger brother recently
moved into the house of her great
grandmother as her dad is living with
another woman who is about to have a baby.
Her mom is working making tortillas but they
often don't have enough for basic food.

Jazmin is 11 and lives
with her mom and 2 sisters and one brother
(to the right) on
a hillside village outside the town
of San Andreas. Jazmin goes to school everyday and is getting
good grades. Their mom, who is
tremendously responsible, works about 2 days
a week washing clothes and she only makes
about $5 per day. |

Wilson is 9 and lives
with his mom and 3 sisters on
a hillside village outside the town
of San Andreas. As is quite common here, dad drinks, when he
does work he makes about $6 per day working
in the fields. Their mom, who is
tremendously responsible, works about 2 days
a week washing clothes and she only makes
about $5 per day.

lives in a house with 5 other families. Each
one of the families has one room each. In
his family there are 4 siblings and his
parents. Pedrito suffers from an illness of
the kidneys and needs constant treatment.
Because of this he is usually grumpy but
some 15 photos later we caught him with this
smile.

is one of 3 siblings who are living with
their mom in a corn-stalk shack with dirt
floors, tin roof and plastic to keep out the
elements. They used to be helped by a now
defunct program with another organization so
their situation is rather dire at the moment.

with her mom, two siblings, grandmother and
her great ant. The father does not help the
family much and the mother works to raise
the three children earning 250 dollars per
month. She is always the one with the brightest smiles |

story: Kimberly is 7 years
old,
she is the oldest sister of 3 siblings. She takes care of them in the school and at home.
Their mom works 7 days per week on a farm that is a long way from home and she barely earns enough for all of them.
Kimberly loves to come to the school project (where we also do Leadership
Development with the director) and where she
can be clean, fed and doesn't have to worry
about family conflicts.

a very basic kitchen on the edge
of a canyon, not very safe. These
two boys take care of Alex
while mom is working,
shopping or picking firewood.

Jasmine lives in a shack of tin
roofs and walls, and dirt floors
high on the mountain slum that
abuts the school. Her sister

Gudiel is 8
years old, he is the only
boy of four siblings. Gudiel helps
his mother picking up wood in the
mountain to sell it at the market
and bring some money home. He
is also involved at the school
where he helps with
cleaning
bathrooms, fixing doors,
bringing the trash out and
whatever is needed.

Grecia is a sibling
of Keller to the right. Their
mom is 50, and
spends most of her
time picking
firewood in the mountains so
the kids are left alone most of
the day and the older ones can't go to school.
There is no dad in the picture. The family also grows peas
and earns about $90 per month
when in season. There is
no bathroom on the compound.

live in a dark, old two roomed home with the
grandmother who is sick and needs constant
medication.

old and
very lively. She lives in a very poor
situation and needs help. Her mom
cannot afford to
buy her a uniform
and shoes to go to the school. She
lives with her other three siblings
and her mom who earns 600
quetzals (about 70 USD) per month.
Their mom is on the
edge of crisis
as she finds herself powerless to
support her family.
